Tucked into the lush, rolling terrain of Hillsborough Knolls, this sweeping mid-century home marries timeless design, beautiful updates, and stunning, one-of-a-kind outdoor spaces.
Welcome home to 1437 San Raymundo Road!
Choose between two separate entries to access this incredibly secluded property. Use the gated driveway from Sandra Road or descend a lovely, ivy-covered hill to reach the front door off San Raymundo Road. A paved sitting area — shaded by a majestic oak tree and wrapped in landscaping — rests beside the freshly painted facade and presents a perfect introduction to this home.
Sweeping double doors open to the impressive entry, where a chic chandelier is anchored in the high vaulted ceiling, and slate tile expands out ahead. Beyond the foyer, make your way to the large living room equipped with a stone-clad fireplace and a soaring, beamed ceiling. This excellent entertainment space is filled with light from windows and glass sliding doors that open to the expansive, newly refinished deck which provides a view of the Japanese garden below.
Drenched in natural light and offering views of the surrounding landscape, the formal dining room is connected to the freshly updated kitchen and offers an elegant space to share meals with family and friends. Boasting a full suite of stainless steel appliances, this chic kitchen incorporates sage cabinets finished with brass hardware, subway tile backsplash, and new stone countertops. Enjoy the added benefit of a wet bar, butler’s pantry, breakfast nook and glass sliders that flow out to the front patio for al-fresco dining.
To the left of the grand foyer, a long corridor with recessed lighting and ample storage takes you to the bedroom quarters and dedicated laundry room. The blissful and spacious primary suite provides two closets, a private balcony overlooking the garden below, and a large ensuite with separate sinks, a walk-in shower, and a large tub. Each of the four guest bedrooms features gorgeously framed garden views and plenty of closet space. Find a glass-encased shower, newly updated flooring, and double-sink vanity in the accompanying hall bathroom.
Follow stairs down to the lower level where you will find a hall closet with a safe, a half bath with plumbing if you choose to convert it into a full bathroom, access to the carport, and an additional guest bedroom with dedicated exterior access. Down the hall, a massive bonus room presents endless opportunities for a playroom, recreation room, secondary living space, or however you imagine. With glass sliders to the backyard and a fireplace, this room is a great space to host parties and events, a luxurious home gym, or a stately game room.
As if the interior wasn’t dreamy enough, the backyard is an enchanting oasis. This stunning Japanese style garden was imagined by the previous owner, Dr. Werner Rosenau. From glass sliders, pea gravel and moss stone covered paths guide you on a tranquil journey through the garden to lovely vignettes filled with Japanese lanterns and an array of carefully selected plantings. In the rear corner of the garden, a pergola frames stunning views of both the garden and the sophisticated home, while tiered garden beds off the upper level offer a place for vegetables and herbs.
The desirable location grants peace and serenity with proximity to vibrant nearby cities. Outdoor enthusiasts can visit nearby parks and trails at Crossroads Park and Sawyer Camp Trail, or hit a round of golf at Crystal Springs Golf Course. Easy access to I-280 allows for easy commuting, while nearby vibrant San Mateo and chic Burlingame bring all of the shopping, dining, and entertainment you could need.
This stunning Japanese style garden was imagined by Dr. Werner Rosenau, Professor Emeritus of Pathology at UCSF. Dr. Rosenau’s travels to Asia began in the late 1960’s and he became enamored with the Japanese and Chinese cultures and their gardens. Dr. Rosenau began the first steps to bring his vision for his own garden to life in the 1990's. The removal of the pool allowed a blank canvas for his design. Meticulously and painstakingly curated, he added beautiful rocks and moved the soil to change the topography, he planted a cherry blossom tree, and sourced black pines from the Sierra Nevadas. He carefully and painstakingly selected conifers and created a range of greens throughout the garden. Authentic Japanese lanterns placed throughout the property are a collection of traditional hand-carved lanterns, some with storied pedigrees. So striking was his creation that it was featured in the beautiful book, “Living with Japanese Gardens.” We invite you to take your time and pause in the little vignettes created by Dr. Rosenau to quiet the mind and take in the beauty of nature, just as he intended.
